This community is being developed to create a community meeting place for all those people who are interested in any facet of clothing alterations, fashion, design and cultural change.
We will discuss the role of clothing in today’s world, the skills required, the audience served, the needs we face as sewists* choosing work machines, our supplies, our prices, traditional and/or modern ways of working with the today’s fabrics.
Fashion’s rules of the past no longer apply. Work and leisure environments expect a varied array of clothing styles, a younger generation expects clothes to reflect their personality and many people expect to wear many new, different styles in one year. Body types warrant consideration in deciding what to wear and individual needs are deemed important.
Finally, we must consider the environment of our earth. Landfills are fast filling up with unwanted fabrics. Many of today’s fabrics do not break down into the dust of creation and additionally may be embedded with chemicals that cannot become a healthy part of our earth.
We sewists will be needing to do more and more to accommodate the needs of our fellow men, women and children. Let us sew what a community can do.
*sewist- “Sewist” is a word that combines sewer and artist. It’s a word that defines the modern sewing movement.
Sewists love fabric and thread and the self-expression and empowerment that sewing brings. We’re creative and unique and proud to say, “Yep, I made that.” Phrase used by Abagail Patner Glassenberg on her website, While She Naps, https://whileshenaps.com/ Date:
